Being a big fan of sustainability, renewable energy and recycling I was interested to hear about the new product that has been created by Close the Loop.

Taking polymer bags (plastic shopping bags etc) and printer toner cartridges, Close the Loop Have developed and now launched a product called TonerPlas which is an asphalt additive and is now a key ingredient to making high performance asphalt roads that last longer and require less maintenance than traditional asphalt.

TonerPlas improves the mechanical properties of asphalt, leading to improved durability, water and rutt-resistance, without any increased environmental impacts in comparison to a standard road. Designed to melt into the binder component in asphalt, it can also be added to existing asphalt.

Traditionally soft plastics can be very difficult to recycle and we’ve seen recent examples of soft plastics being collected yet not recycled so finally seeing something useful happening to used products rather than going to landfill is really pleasing.  With that said, limiting our use of soft plastics so they don’t become an issue we have to find a way to recycle or reuse would be the ideal scenario but I think we’re still a long way from that unfortunately.

For the fact nerds amongst you, Close the Loop have supplied these nuggets:

  • Every tonne of TonerPlas uses plastic from 106,000 plastic bags and 2,500 waste toner cartridges.
  • Roads made with TonerPlas last longer, less maintenance, reducing whole of life cost.
  • TonerPlas increases road longevity under high heat and heavy traffic.

So, after learning about this groundbreaking new product, we were really pleased to be commissioned to photograph their launch event, at which they presented the technology and machinery to industry partners, government representatives and local community members.  Below you’ll see a wide selection of photos from the launch event at their Melbourne warehouse facility.

Are you hosting a corporate event or launch that you need photographed? Maybe you have a new recycling or manufacturing facility you would like to show to potential clients?  Drop us a line using the contact form below and we’ll in be touch promptly.
