The Dalai Lama was in Melbourne recently and I was fortunate to be able to photograph him at a press conference for media outlets.

My favourite shot from the day isn’t the best technically, or even well lit, but in it he is having a bit of fun in an unguarded moment, which was a nice contrast to his more serious manner in front of the assembled photographers and journalists.

He was on his way out of the venue after a piece to camera and I was crouching on the floor packing up my camera gear when someone handed him a Sherrin football as a gift.  I looked up and, and without the flash (that had been packed away) snapped a couple of frames as he walked past me on the way to the exit.

He seemed pretty pleased with his gift!
