In September 2025, we were commissioned to photograph the official opening of EcoBatt’s Battery-in-Device Shredding (BIDS) Plant in Victoria — Australia’s first dedicated facility of its kind, and a world first. It was the kind of event that reminds you why this work matters.
The opening was a landmark occasion. The Hon Steve Dimopoulos MP, Victorian Minister for Environment, joined EcoCycle Group CEO Doug Rowe to officially open the facility, with The Hon Christopher Pyne of Pyne & Partners lending his considerable presence as MC.
The plant itself is a genuine engineering achievement — the result of a close collaboration between EcoBatt and Gloyd Recycling Solutions, who partnered in the design and construction of the facility. Backed by a $2 million grant from the Circular Economy Infrastructure Fund – Hazardous Waste, delivered by Sustainability Victoria under the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria: a new economy plan, this is a project with serious public and commercial weight behind it.
What the plant actually does is quietly remarkable. Every day, more devices are being manufactured with increasingly complex battery configurations — mobile phones, laptops, toothbrushes, power tools. Most people have no idea how difficult it is to recover those materials safely. The BIDS Plant uses specialised shredding and separation technology to extract batteries from devices and recover more than 90 per cent of valuable materials, including metals and plastics, for reuse — processing up to one tonne of devices per hour.
As Doug Rowe put it, ‘every home has products with hidden batteries, and until now there simply hasn’t been a dedicated way to recover them at scale. This plant changes that — safely, onshore, and responsibly.’

You’re documenting leadership, industrial innovation and genuine environmental progress. The environment itself — the scale of the machinery, the industrial textures of the plant floor, the contrast between that setting and the formality of ministerial attendance — makes for compelling imagery when you know how to read a room and anticipate moments before they happen.
That’s precisely what professional event photography delivers. The images captured on a day like this become the media assets, the social content, the annual report hero shots. They are the lasting visual record of a historic milestone in an expanding business.
