On-Site Photography for Interflow: Real Crews, Real Jobs

Interflow has been keeping Australia’s water infrastructure running since 1936 – water mains, wastewater, stormwater, culverts, the lot. When they needed to refresh their staff photography, the brief we got was pleasingly open: get out on site, capture the crew in action, mix up posed and candid shots, and make sure the final set accurately reflected the diversity of their workforce.

No forced set-ups, no ‘look busy for the camera’ moments. Just a straightforward brief to visit one of their many sites where the work is happening and deliver images that actually look like Interflow.

A mix of posed and unposed

We worked across several active sites on this civil engineering project, in full PPE, alongside crews replacing water mains in inner city residential areas.

Some of the strongest images came from simply staying out of the way and shooting the job as it happened: hands on tools, workers communicating, the everyday activity of a busy worksite. Others were more deliberate, including in-field portraits, using the site itself as the backdrop rather than pulling people away to a studio or a blank wall.

The candid shots give a feel of authenticity; the posed ones give Interflow’s marketing team something clean and usable for recruitment ads, quote documents and internal comms.

The brief requested photography that represented the full mix of genders, ages and backgrounds across their crews. More businesses in construction and infrastructure are asking for this now, and for good reason: stock photography of hard hats and hi-vis has never looked like anyone’s actual workforce.

Photographing an organisation’s own people, doing their own jobs, is a more accurate representation of who works there and always look far more authentic than any stock library image.
